The IDF and Shin Bet confirmed on Tuesday the elimination of Mohammad Fathi Abd al-Hay Abu Fakher, the commander of Hamas's Yibna Battalion in the Rafah Brigade, alongside senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) operatives involved in the October 7 massacre and the holding of Israeli hostages.
The elimination of Mohammad Fathi Abd al-Hay Abu Fakher marks a significant blow to the Hamas military framework in southern Gaza. According to the IDF and Shin Bet, Abu Fakher was a veteran commander who served for approximately 20 years as a central figure in Hamas's weapons smuggling network and a senior official in the military wing's Supply Department. In recent weeks, he had been actively working to recruit and train new terrorists in an attempt to restore the Yibna Battalion's operational capabilities to attack Israeli forces.
Separately, the military announced the elimination of two senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) figures. Ali Qaid Mohammed Stitan, a Nukhba platoon commander who infiltrated Israel during the October 7 massacre, was killed in a precision aerial strike in central Gaza after attempting to advance further attacks against troops and civilians. Additionally, Talal Jaber Mohammad Abd al-Aal was eliminated in southern Gaza; the IDF identified him as a cell commander who not only participated in the initial infiltration but was also involved in the captivity of hostages held by PIJ.
These operations underscore the ongoing IDF effort to dismantle the command structure of both Hamas and PIJ while targeting those directly responsible for the October 7 atrocities. The military's focus on Abu Fakher highlights a strategic priority to prevent the rehabilitation of Hamas battalions in Rafah, where the terror organization continues to attempt to replenish its ranks despite sustained pressure. The elimination of Abd al-Aal further links the operational strikes to the intelligence-driven mission of holding hostage-captors accountable.
