The IDF cleared for publication on Sunday morning the name of Staff Sgt. Nir Ben Ari, 21, a Maglan commando fighter who fell in combat in southern Lebanon. Ben Ari is the fifth casualty identified from a single heavy incident involving a tank of the 52nd Battalion (401st Armored Brigade), which also claimed the life of the battalion commander.
The identification of Staff Sgt. Nir Ben Ari completes the list of five soldiers killed in a significant operational incident in southern Lebanon over the weekend. Ben Ari, a commando in the Maglan unit, fell alongside four members of the 52nd Armored Battalion. The previously named casualties include the battalion commander, Lt.-Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, as well as Staff Sgt. Naveh Havshush, Staff Sgt. Yoav Klein, and Staff Sgt. Liav Kababia.
According to material reviewed by The Zioneer Intelligence Desk, the incident involved a tank from the 401st Armored Brigade during high-intensity operations. While Ben Ari served in the Maglan commando unit, he was operating in conjunction with the armored forces at the time of the strike. Funerals for Staff Sgt. Naveh Havshush, a resident of Geva Binyamin, and Staff Sgt. Yoav Klein were held on Sunday. Havshush, a tank commander who was planning to attend officer training, had sent a final message to his father shortly before the incident, expressing hope to surprise his mother by returning home.
The loss of a battalion commander and four additional fighters in a single engagement underscores the complexity of the current ground maneuvers in southern Lebanon. The IDF continues to operate against Hezbollah infrastructure in the region, facing a combination of anti-tank fire, IEDs, and drone strikes. As of Sunday morning, the military has finalized the notification of the families of those killed in this specific encounter.
