This morning at the Qalandia checkpoint, civilian Arab security guards driving an unmarked vehicle blocked Border Police officers and then attacked them upon exiting the vehicle. One officer, perceiving mortal danger, shot one assailant in the lower body. Israeli media later reported two suspects were lightly wounded. There were no injuries to Israeli forces.
A severe incident unfolded Tuesday morning at the Qalandia checkpoint north of Jerusalem when civilian Arab security guards — initially unidentified as guards — attacked Border Police officers.
According to multiple reports, the officers arrived at the rear entrance of the checkpoint and found their path blocked by a vehicle carrying the guards, who were not recognized as security personnel. When the officers exited their vehicle to move the obstruction, the guards also got out and physically assaulted them. One officer, fearing for his life, opened fire, striking one assailant in the lower body. A report from i24NEWS cited by N12 (10:09) later stated that both suspects, who turned out to be employed as guards, were lightly wounded. Police said the incident is under investigation.
No Israeli forces were hurt. The incident follows a recent pattern of security incidents at West Bank checkpoints, including an attempted car-ramming at the Hashmonaim checkpoint last month and a car-theft breach at the Hizma checkpoint (as The Zioneer reported on June 30). The Qalandia checkpoint, a major crossing point between Jerusalem and the West Bank, has been the site of occasional friction between security forces and Palestinian civilians.
