01 · THE DISPATCH

An Iranian military source told state-aligned media that the explosion heard off Sirik, on Iran's southern coast, was linked to a confrontation with an oil tanker attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz. FARS news agency added that Iranian forces prevented the tanker from entering the strait without prior coordination. The claim, which emerged just after 02:00 Jerusalem, is the latest in a stream of accounts that have shifted across the day.

Earlier on Monday the reported a sequence of rapid, often conflicting, reports. At 11:21 Jerusalem, Iranian media first reported explosions near Sirik and Bandar Abbas, followed within minutes by Tasnim attributing the sounds to routine strait activity and denying any projectile impacts. Mehr then reported repeated blasts, and Iran's state broadcaster IRIB said the explosions were caused by IRGC Navy enforcement of a blockade and linked them to the closure of the waterway. These early accounts were single-source and unverified. By 15:24 Jerusalem, Iran-linked channels reported a fresh exchange of fire with the US Navy in the strait, and at 00:47 Jerusalem Tasnim had confirmed clashes between the IRGC and the US Navy — corroboration that widened the source base from one channel to multiple newsrooms.

As The Zioneer reported on June 10-11, the events unfold against a backdrop of escalating US-Iran confrontations: US strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, Trump's announcement that he called off planned strikes and that a deal had been reached, and Iran's announcement of the strait's closure. The current incident — a tanker confrontation — involves a distinct maritime actor but occurs in the same geographic flashpoint.

Neither the tanker's flag nor its destination has been reported. The claim remains sourced to a single Iranian military source and has not been independently verified. It is unclear whether this tanker incident is related to the earlier exchanges with the US Navy.
