IRGC Navy
The IRGC Navy (NEDSA) is the maritime wing of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, primarily responsible for asymmetric warfare and the enforcement of Iranian sovereignty in the Persian Gulf and the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGC Navy) serves as the primary instrument of the Iranian regime's maritime brinkmanship. Unlike the regular Iranian Navy (Artesh), which focuses on blue-water operations, the IRGC Navy is optimized for asymmetric coastal defense and 'swarming' tactics using fast attack craft, naval mines, and shore-based anti-ship missiles. Its headquarters is located in the strategic port city of Bandar Abbas, and it maintains a significant presence in the Hormozgan Province, overlooking the Strait of Hormuz—a chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supply passes.
In early 2026, the IRGC Navy became the central actor in a global energy crisis after formally declaring the total closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This blockade was framed by Tehran as a response to U.S. military strikes. Under the command of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the IRGC Navy has actively seized commercial vessels and threatened any maritime traffic attempting to navigate the waterway. These actions led to unprecedented international repercussions, including the first-ever European Union sanctions specifically targeting an IRGC naval unit—the Hormozgan District Command—for restricting freedom of navigation.
The organization has suffered significant leadership and infrastructure losses during the June 2026 kinetic confrontation with the United States and Israel. Reports indicate that the IRGC Navy's top commander, Alireza Tangsiri, was eliminated in a targeted strike in Bandar Abbas. Furthermore, key installations including the Sirik naval base and the Bandar Kargan base have been subjected to multiple waves of airstrikes, resulting in the destruction of radar systems, air defense batteries, and strategic maritime assets. Despite these setbacks, the IRGC Navy remains the regime's frontline force in its effort to leverage maritime access for diplomatic and military concessions.
