IRGC attacks Singapore-flagged cargo ship off Oman; Iran proposes Strait toll plan

Primary source Internal intake · 9 reviewed intake signals · Desk window 23:25

TL;DR

Iran's Revolutionary Guard struck a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel southeast of Dahit, Oman, causing structural damage to the bridge with no casualties reported, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations and senior U.S. officials cited by The Wall Street Journal. Separately, Iran is seeking to charge ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a plan opposed by the U.S. and Gulf states.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Tonight (Thu), the IRGC struck a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel southeast of Dahit, Oman, around 18:18 Jerusalem, causing structural damage to the bridge but no casualties, per UKMTO and senior US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. The attack advances Iran's campaign to impose fees on Strait of Hormuz transit, a plan Tehran estimates would yield $40 billion annually, as The Zioneer first reported earlier this month.

The thread unfolded rapidly: at 18:18 Jerusalem, The Zioneer reported IRGC Navy claimed an engagement 7.5 nautical miles off Oman (v1). Minutes later, two US officials confirmed to WSJ the target was Singapore-flagged (v3). By 18:18, further WSJ reports added no casualties and damage to the bridge (v5–v7), and UKMTO confirmed the same. The Zioneer's own 19:37 Jerusalem piece on the same vessel (context item) and its 20:42 Jerusalem piece on the IRGC asserting full control of the strait anchor the sequence. Corroboration evolved from a single unverified claim (v2) to multiple newsrooms and on-record US officials.

The attack follows broader Iranian escalation: on at least two prior occasions, the IRGC launched missiles at vessels attempting unauthorized crossings (June 13 background item) and fired warning shots. The Zioneer reported earlier today that a commercial ship was hit by a missile in the Strait of Hormuz and that the IRGC declared full control of the waterway. Iran has also proposed a joint toll plan with Oman, as The Zioneer reported on June 12.

What remains open: the vessel's identity beyond the flag, its cargo, and whether the strike violated any informal US-Iran maritime understanding were not disclosed. UKMTO is investigating.
