IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir issued an order of the day on Monday morning acknowledging that 'the IDF failed in its mission to protect Israeli citizens,' while vowing to identify and strike emerging threats and prevent enemy rearmament.
As Israel marks three years since the October 7 massacre, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir issued a formal order of the day on Monday morning, acknowledging that the military failed in its paramount mission. 'The IDF failed in its most important mission to protect the civilians of the State of Israel,' Zamir wrote. He vowed to ensure that the lessons of the disaster are fully implemented: 'It is our duty to investigate and ensure that the lessons are implemented, so that we may be more worthy of the trust the people have placed in us.'
Zamir also pledged to take the fight to Israel's enemies and prevent their rearmament. 'We will not allow our enemies to strengthen undisturbed. We will identify threats as they emerge and strike them with determination and force,' he stated. The order, released by the IDF Spokesperson's Unit at 06:31 Jerusalem, praised the heroism of troops and reservists and affirmed that 'the spirit of victory' will not be broken.
The Zioneer reported earlier at 05:01 Jerusalem that Zamir presented the main conclusions from the October 7 investigations to the General Staff on Sunday and ordered a complete overhaul of intelligence and force readiness. The Knesset flag was lowered to half-staff for the state memorial day.
Zamir's candid acknowledgement of failure came amid a backdrop of national mourning. On the eve of the anniversary, the Defense Ministry and National Insurance Institute released updated data showing 1,318 security personnel and 1,029 civilians killed since the outbreak of the war. Zamir, who assumed command in March 2025, has consistently stated that the IDF will pursue every terrorist involved in the October 7 attack without rest.
