The IDF Central Command (Pakmaz) is one of the Israel Defense Forces' four regional commands, holding a unique and complex mandate. While its geographic scope includes the Gush Dan and Jerusalem metropolitan areas, its primary operational focus is the Judea and Samaria region. Unlike other commands, the GOC Central Command serves as the legal sovereign in Judea and Samaria, wielding administrative and security authority over both Israeli and Palestinian populations. This dual role requires the command to balance intensive counter-terrorism efforts with the maintenance of civil order and infrastructure development.

In the current strategic landscape of mid-2026, Central Command is operating under significant strain. The command is tasked with preventing the spillover of multi-front conflicts into the heart of Israel, particularly as terrorist organizations like Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad attempt to ignite a third front from within Judea and Samaria. This involves near-daily raids to dismantle terror cells and the protection of hundreds of Jewish communities and strategic transit routes.

Beyond traditional security, the command has recently taken on expanded administrative roles. This includes the regulation of critical infrastructure, such as the natural gas market in Judea and Samaria, to ensure regional energy security and public safety. Simultaneously, the command's headquarters in Jerusalem has become a focal point for domestic social friction. Protests by Haredi activists against military draft enforcement have targeted the base, highlighting the command's position at the intersection of Israel's security requirements and its internal societal debates. As the IDF manages personnel shortages across all fronts, the Central Command remains the essential shield for Israel's most populated regions.
