The Lead
One thousand days after the October 7, 2023 massacre, Israel stands at a vastly different strategic juncture. What began as a moment of profound national vulnerability has evolved into a multi-front campaign that has dismantled the military capabilities of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, neutralized the leadership of Hezbollah, and significantly degraded the Iranian regime's regional influence.
The strategic arc of the last 1,000 days reflects a transition from defensive shock to proactive deterrence. In the Gaza Strip, the IDF has destroyed the majority of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad's military infrastructure and now maintains control over approximately 70% of the territory. The architects of the October 7 massacre—including Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, and Azzam al-Haddad—have been eliminated, effectively decapitating the organization's leadership. In the north, the conflict with Hezbollah, which began as a defensive posture, escalated into a decisive campaign. The assassination of Hassan Nasrallah and the senior leadership of the organization, coupled with the establishment of a security buffer zone in southern Lebanon, has fundamentally altered the threat landscape for Israel's northern communities. The regional picture has been further transformed by two major operations: Operation Rising Lion in June 2025 and the joint U.S.-Israeli Operation Roaring Lion in February 2026. These operations targeted the core of the Iranian regime, resulting in the elimination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, senior IRGC commanders, and key scientists, while inflicting severe damage on military infrastructure. These actions have set back Iran's military buildup by years. Concurrently, the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria and the establishment of an Israeli buffer zone there have effectively neutralized the 'Axis of Resistance.' Domestically, the IDF has also cleared terror strongholds in Jenin, Tulkarm, and other hotspots in Judea and Samaria. While the security establishment continues to focus on completing the mission and ensuring long-term stability, the past 1,000 days have marked a period of significant strategic realignment for the State of Israel.
