The Lead
The Israel Defense Forces announced Thursday that it eliminated two terrorists who infiltrated Israel during the October 7, 2023, massacre in precision airstrikes carried out earlier this week. Muhammad Gamal Mahmoud Abu al-Shar, a Hamas cell commander who participated in the attack on Kibbutz Be'eri and the kidnapping of six Israeli civilians, was killed in Gaza City. A second strike in Jabaliya eliminated Matsa'ab Abd al-Galil Sakhib Balbisi, a commander in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).
The IDF confirmed that the strikes, which took place on Tuesday, targeted operatives who played direct roles in the atrocities of October 7 and remained active threats to Israeli security. Muhammad Gamal Mahmoud Abu al-Shar was specifically identified as a commander involved in the infiltration of Kibbutz Be'eri. According to military records, he participated in the abduction of Sharon Hertzman-Avigdori, Noam Avigdori, Adi Shoham, Nave Shoham, Yahel Shoham, and Shoshan Haran.
Targeting the Perpetrators of October 7
The elimination of Abu al-Shar and Balbisi is part of a sustained effort by the IDF Southern Command and Israeli intelligence to systematically locate and neutralize every individual involved in the October 7 massacre. This strategy has seen numerous mid-level and senior commanders from both Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad targeted in recent months. As The Zioneer reported earlier, similar operations have recently eliminated other Nukhba commanders who led infiltrations into communities such as Kisufim and held Israeli hostages.
Ongoing Threats and Ceasefire Violations
Beyond their historical roles in the 2023 massacre, the IDF stated that both Abu al-Shar and Balbisi had recently advanced terror plots against Israeli forces and civilians. These activities were characterized as systematic violations of the ceasefire. The military emphasized that the strikes were carried out using precise munitions and aerial surveillance to mitigate harm to non-combatants.
Operational Outlook
IDF troops under the Southern Command remain deployed in the area in accordance with existing agreements. The military stated it will continue to operate to remove immediate threats and ensure that those responsible for the October 7 attacks are held accountable. The Zioneer will continue to follow official updates as the IDF maintains its focus on dismantling the remaining operational cadres of terror organizations in Gaza.
