Vaknin, 33, from Eilat, was killed on Wednesday when an explosive device detonated inside a booby-trapped house in the village of Majdal Zoun in southern Lebanon, according to the IDF. The military identified the fallen as Maj. (res.) Harel Birenstock, 34, from Nokdim, and Sgt. Maj. (res.) Tamir Vaknin. The incident marked the first Israeli combat deaths in the sector since the June ceasefire with Hezbollah.
In response to the attack, the IDF carried out strikes on Hezbollah terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including weapons warehouses and a command center, as The Zioneer reported on Wednesday. The Zioneer also reported that the fatal explosion occurred during a search operation when the building collapsed after the device was triggered.
The funerals of both fallen soldiers were held Thursday evening, with the ceremony for Vaknin drawing thousands of mourners in Eilat.
